Tip by Scott Melville

It is important in doubles to realize that each player must assume a role and take an active part in playing a match. Unless your partner is Bob Bryan, being a passive spectator is not the role for you. As a doubles partner, you need to utilize the skills you have, and your skills or traits should compliment those of your partner for the best chance at success.

Some complimentary skills and traits are:

  • Aggressive player & passive player
  • Emotional player & stoic player
  • Put away person & set up person
  • Slow player & quick player (slow needs quick but not vice versa)
  • Volleyer & baseliner
  • Doubles partnerships are similar to 2-on-2 basketball. One player does most of the assisting, and one player does most of the scoring. Shaq is just another player without a complimentary teammate like Kobe or Dwayne, and vice versa. So if you are slow, aggressive, volleying basket case who likes to put the ball away, you must partner with a quick, passive, stoic baseliner who could set you up to finish points. Remember that just saying “Good shot” to your partner is not enough. You must also compliment your partner with your actions.
